At the time these stamps were issued, the U.S. Postal Service was the largest shipper of parcels in the nation. Since that time, a substantial part of that business has gone to private shippers. Even with that loss, the USPS continues to ship a large percentage of packages requiring a system of sorting for rapid delivery.
