Fort Snelling, keelboat & teepees
In 1680 Father Louis Hennepin was the first white explorer to visit the southeastern part of Minnesota. In 1819 Fort Saint Anthony was established, and later renamed Fort Snelling. Settlers gradually began to arrive in the area. The village of Saint Anthony was established on the east bank of the Mississippi in 1855. The village of Minneapolis was incorporated on the west bank in 1856. The two merged into Minneapolis in 1872.
