At the size shown here, this Legends of the West sheetlet appears identical to the one issued October 18, 1994. Note, however, the stamp with the large circle around it. This stamp has a different illustration from the stamp issued in October, although both stamps are labeled "Bill Pickett."
The sheetlet shown was intended for release in June 1994. Considerable attention was drawn to the sheetlet when almost two hundred copies of it were sold prematurely at a number of post offices around the country. As interest increased, it was noted that the Pickett illustration showed the wrong brother. The man shown in this sheet is Bill Pickett's brother Ben.
The U.S. Postal Service chose not to release the incorrect sheets, postponing the issue date until a corrected version could be produced. Considerable debate ensued within the stamp collecting world as to what should be done with the almost 1.3 million "bad" sheets. After a couple of lawsuits and tremendous press coverage, the postal service finally decided to hold a lottery to distribute 150,000 of the incorrect versions, with the remainder to be destroyed.
