Although “jitterbug” comes from an early 20^th century term to describe alcoholics who suffered from the “jitters,” the term later became associated with a form of swing dancing. Cab Calloway is credited with associating the term with dancing. There were distinct forms of jitterbug, i.e., Lindy and Shag, with the latter still quite popular in the North and South Carolina beach scene.
