Leopold Stokowski
Known for his freehand style, rather than using the traditional conductor’s baton, Leopold Stowkowski led some of the foremost orchestras in the United States. He debuted in 1909 and his final public appearance was in 1975. Stokowski performed with the New York Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, NBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Symphony of the Air. He founded the All-American Youth Orchestra, New York City Symphony, American Symphony Orchestra, and the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra. On a lighter note, he was portrayed by Bugs Bunny in the 1948 Looney Tunes cartoon “Long-Haired Hare.”
