Production began in 1995 with filming of the actual wreck of the RMS “Titanic.” Although the story and main characters are fictional, some characters are based on historical fact. At the time of its release, “Titanic” was the most expensive film ever made. It was nominated for 14 Academy Awards, winning 11, including Best Picture. It grossed $1.8 billion, the most ever until Cameron’s film “Avatar” in 2010.
