Raphael, who was born in 1483 and died in 1520, produced quite a few works that have been reproduced on U.S. stamps, in addition to the cherubs produced here. He was an Italian painter who is celebrated for the grace and perfection of his drawings and paintings. He is joined by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo as the High Renaissance’s great masters. Very productive, he ran a large workshop. The Raphael Rooms in the Apostolic Palace of The Vatican is the principal and largest work of his career. Following his early years in Rome, much of the work he designed was completed by his workshop from his drawings.
