Daily and weekly newspapers have been delivering cartoons since 1895. This set of twenty stamps, issued in sheetlet form, honors classic comics, and is part of the Classic Collection stamp series. The Newspaper Features Council reports that 86 million American adults and 17 million children read the Sunday comics each week. One of the nation's only indigenous art forms, the comic strip and its characters have popularized everything from words and phrases like "I Yam Wot I Yam" (Popeye), to the foods we eat, like Dagwood sandwiches, to movies (Popeye) and Broadway shows (Annie).
