Geronimo--Goyahkla (One who yawns)--was a Chiricahua Apache war leader who led raids against Mexican and U.S. troops for 30 years in the American Southwest. Much of his success was attributed by his people to supernatural powers, including a reputed invulnerability to bullets. After the slaying of an Apache prophet in 1881, Geronimo and his brother-in-law, the Chiricahua chief Juh, led raids from a secret camp in the Sierra Madre.
