Historic World War II events of 1944 are shown on this 10-stamp souvenir sheet, the fourth set of stamps in a five-year series. The comprehensive World War II stamp series consists of stamps released during each of the years from 1991 to 1995, documenting key events of the war in the years 1941-1945.
A world map is part of each souvenir sheet, with areas involved in battle highlighted. Ceremonies marking the first day of issue for this set of stamps took place aboard a U.S. ship off the coast of Normandy, France. The U.S. Postal Service worked with a Joint Services Stamp Committee, headed by the Chief of Military History of the U.S. Army and formed through the Department of Defense in 1985 to develop the series. This group advised the Postal Service on which subjects should be chosen for commemoration. The committee included military historians from the United States Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps. Advice regarding significant events of the war period also was sought from the Department of State historian.
