John Greenleaf Whittier

John Greenleaf Whittier achieved national prominence with his poem Snow-Bound in 1866, which celebrated the rural world of New England. A Quaker, he began as a journalist, taking up the abolitionist cause in his pamphlet Justice and Expediency. He is remembered for the poems Maud Muller, The Barefoot Boy, and Barbara Frietchie.
