First appearing in 1897, toy electric trains increased in popularity as electricity became more common throughout the United States in the 1920s. With the popularity came new features, such as whistles, ability to change direction, couple and uncouple remotely, lighting, etc. Early electric trains in the United States generally were made of lithographed tin.
