Commemorative issue Indian headdresses - American folk art
Assiniboin
An Indian tribe of the Great Plains, the Assiniboin separated from the Dakota and Lakota Sioux about the mid-17th century. A typical Plains warrior society, the Assiniboin relied on buffalo for clothing, food, and shelter. It used the horse for mobility when hunting or fighting. The Sun Dance was the tribe's most sacred ritual, and the long-feathered headdress indicated male status and prestige.
