The Mayo Brothers, Drs. William and Charles, were distinguished surgeons who established the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, the town in which their father settled as a country doctor. The clinic was established as part of St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester in the early 1900s. About 1915 the clinic's facilities were expanded greatly, and the brothers attracted other distinguished physicians from all over the world. They also founded the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research as part of the University of Minnesota.
