Franklinia alatamaha, William Bartram
Shown on the stamp is Franklinia alatamaha, discovered by William Bartram. He and his father. John were very prominent American naturalists. A Pennsylvanian, in 1773 he began a four-year journey through eight southern colonies. He took extensive note and made many drawings of the flora and fauna, as well as visiting a principal Seminole village at Cuscowilla and the Cherokee Nationa.
