The puma also is known as the mountain lion or cougar. Pumas range from British Columbia through South America. They prefer forested areas and jungles and are able to adapt to various climates. Its coat ranges in color from reddish to brownish yellow or gray. Black stripes run from the mouth to the eyes, and the tip of the tail is black. Pumas climb well, are excellent jumpers, and usually hunt at night. It is known to drop from limbs onto its prey. They usually live to be about 12 years old, but have been known to live up to 19 years in captivity. Pumas have been eliminated or are endangered in many parts of the Americas. Cattle ranchers are a threat because of the general belief that pumas attack cattle.
