Son of a marble worker, Antonello was one of the most important painters of southern Italy of the Renaissance period during the first half of the 15th century. Before 1460, he spent time in the Netherlands learning from the methods acquired by the followers of Jan van Eyck. His travels included Rome, Messina, and Venice. In Milan he painted portraits for the Duke of Milan. In Venice he painted for the Council of Ten.
