The bridge shown in this stamp design is one of two that is a major artery for
San Francisco.

California has more than 20 million registered motor vehicles.  The state is so
automobile-oriented that railroads are less important than other forms of
transportation.

The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was the subject of considerable concern,
following the 1989 earthquake that rocked the region.
