Gen. John Stark led the Green Mountain Boys against the British near Bennington, VT, on August 16, 1777. The battle is regarded as a turning point in the American Revolution and is commemorated by a 306-foot (93 m) granite obelisk. Bennington is a town in the southwest corner of Vermont and is the seat of Bennington County. It is on the Walloomsac River, between the Taconic and Green Mountains. The town was settled in 1761 and named for Benning Wentworth, governor of New Hampshire.
