Symbols of South Carolina
South Carolina's oldest city, Charleston, is located on a narrow peninsula at the confluence of the Ashley and Cooper Rivers. It has an excellent, sheltered harbor and is a major Atlantic Coast port. Founded in 1670 at Ablemarle Point, the city originally was known as Charles Towne. It was named for Charles II. The city was moved to its current location in 1680 and rapidly developed a large trade in rice, deer skins, and indigo. The firing on Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor set off the Civil War.
