Francis Ouimet began his golf career as a caddie and became captain of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of Saint Andrews, Scotland. As an amateur golfer at the age of 20, Ouimet defeated two of Britain's best professional golfers in a playoff at the U.S. Open Tournament at Brookline, MA. He was a relative unknown then, with the sport itself considered rather aristocratic. In 1914 he won the U.S. Amateur championship and again won in 1931.
