A folk here – real or mythical – attains that stature by having his/her name or personality imprinted in the popular consciousness. Although some folk heroes are historical public figures, they often begin “life” as a normal person, with that live extended through song, folk tales, and other folklore. The four men honored by these stamps – Mighty Casey (at the Bat), Paul Bunyan, John Henry, and Pecos Bill – certainly were bigger than life.
