Giovanni Battista Tiepolo was the son of a ship-owner and merchant. His early works led to many commissions. About 1720, he went to Udine to fresco the Palazzo Arcivescovile for Archbishop Dionisio Dolfin. He also painted frescoes in the Chapel of the Sacrament in the cathedral and created various decorations in the castle. Other fresco commissions included the ceiling in the Palazzo Archinto, the vault of the Capella Colleoni, and the chapel of St. Vittore in the Church of St. Amrogio and the ceiling of the sacristy.
