These two stamps were issued to honor the 200th anniversary of Capt. James
Cook's arrival in Hawaii.
The two stamps represent the first time that stamps
of different orientations -- one vertical and one horizontal -- have been
printed together. On full panes of 50 stamps, 25 of each orientation, the two
orientations meet at the middle to form configurations such as that
illustrated.
