Best known as the longtime coach of the University of Alabama football team, Paul William “Bear” Bryant and his teams won six national championships and 13 conference championships. At the time of his retirement in 1982, he held the record for most wins as a head coach in collegiate football. Prior to moving to the University of Alabama, he was head coach at the University of Maryland, University of Kentucky, and Texas A&M University. Leading his Arkansas high school team to the state football championship, Bryant enrolled on scholarship at Alabama before he graduated high school. He obtained his high school diploma at Tuscaloosa, AL, High School while practicing with the university football team.
