Design of this stamp commemorated the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the American poultry industry and the development and production of poultry and poultry products. This stamp was a major reason why shortly after its release, a movement began that led to stamp designs and commemorations no longer being ordered by the U.S. Congress. Presently, there is a Citizen's Stamp Advisory Committee to the Postmaster General. The year 1948 saw a large number of stamps issued that commemorated subjects that the general public did not believe were necessarily worthy of such honor, in light of the previous track record.
