A German inventory, in 1884 Ottmar Mergenthaler developed the linotype machine that quickly and easily set movable type. The linotype machine revolutionized printing. Before the linotype, newspapers were hampered by having to set type one letter at a time. The machine sets type from a keyboard in full lines and allows newspapers to publish editions of more than eighth pages at a time. Mergenthaler immigrated to the United States in 1872 and became a naturalized citizen in 1878.
