The stamps in this set feature designs based on a Mexican art form known as “papel picado,” Spanish for “pierced paper.”
Designs normally are cut from tissue paper using small chisels and a guide, which allows creation of as many as 40 banners at one time. Another methods is to fold tissue paper and use small scissors.
Resulting papel picado themes may be both religious and secular and may feature birds, floral designs, and skeletons. They are particular popular for Easter, Christmas, weddings, baptisms, Day of the Dead, and christenings.
