College football has evolved into a major attraction in the United States. Hundreds of colleges field teams, in a variety of leagues and jurisdictions, with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) the most dominant. Teams may play before audiences numbering in from the hundreds to 100,000. Much pageantry accompanies such games, including cheerleaders, marching bands, and pre-game picnicking. Football essentially is an American sport, except for Canadians, who plan with slightly different rules.
