Joel Chandler Harris was a humorist and Southern writer of local-color who is most famous for Negro Folklore: The Story of Mr. Rabbit and Mr. Fox, as Told by Uncle Remus. First appearing in the Atlanta Constitution in 1879, the popularity of the story led to Harris' publishing the collection Uncle Remus, His Songs and Sayings four years later. Harris also wrote many volumes of short stories. His novels include Sister Jane, Her Friends and Acquaintances and Gabriel Tolliver.
