Giovanni Battista Moroni produced many works during his 35-year career in the midst of the High Renaissance of the 16th century. His portraits are distinctive because he did not embellish the background with landscape or architectural displays. His backgrounds were neutral, giving the full emphasis to the subject. Moroni only painted religious subjects in the last years of his career. His religious themes showed the direct influence of Il Moretto.
