Located in Coos County on the New Hampshire-Maine border, the Town of Errol worked with the Trust for Public Land (TPL) to acquire and conserve the 5,145-acre 13 Mile Woods property as New Hampshire’s newest Community Forest. With a significant portion of the town of Errol’s population below the poverty line, TPL conveyed the land to 13 Mile Woods Association, Inc., a nonprofit group established to manage the property for the benefit of the town of Errol. Locally owned and managed town forests are an appealing model in the northeast because of the benefits they bring to not only the town but the landscape.
The 13 Mile Woods contains a variety of rare wildlife and fauna, and more than 20 miles of rivers and streams. The project’s $4 million acquisition cost was funded through a mix of federal Forest Legacy funding, New Market Tax Credits, private fundraising and funding from OSI.
