Considered the greatest film of all time, Citizen Kane was nominated for nine Academy Awards and won for best original screenplay. Orson Welles directed and starred in the drama based on a principal character based on the life of William Randolph Hearst. The newspaper magnate would not permit mention of the film in any of his newspapers. The film was heralded for its innovative cinematography, narrative, and music. Although an artistic and critical success, the film’s box-office receipts failed to cover its costs.
