Ralph Waldo Emerson was a noted lecturer, essayist and poet. He was an ordained Unitarian minister and a leading exponent of American transcendentalism. He questioned the established views of literature, philosophy, and religion. His essay "Self-Reliance" tells man to trust himself against a society that "everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of every one of its members." He held that "nothing can bring you peace but yourself." Emerson's discussions of organic form put forth the belief that everything proceeds from a natural order that is followed but not imposed by man.
