Jonquils

Jonquil, is any of several yellow narcissuses that came from southern Europe and northern Africa. In the United States, the best-known types are a species named jonquil and a species called campernelle jonquil. The campernelle jonquil is a hybrid bred from different jonquil species. Jonquils bear three to six flowers on a stalk about 1 foot (30 centimeters) high. The flowers’ petals are grouped around a tube about 1 inch the jonquil has bright yellow flowers and sword-shaped leaves. Jonquils bear three to six blossoms on each stalk (2.5 centimeters) long. The name jonquil comes from the Latin juncus, meaning rush. Jonquils are planted in autumn. See also Narcissus.Scientific classification. Jonquils belong to the amaryllis family, Amaryllidaceae. The jonquil is Narcissus jonquilla.
