While the 500th anniversary of Columbus's voyages to the New World has come and gone, controversy continues as to just what the Vikings did in their earlier- -by nearly 500 years--voyages to North America. A combination of evidence and fantasy make up the story of Viking exploits. The stamp was issued to honor the centennial of the arrival at New York harbor of a group of Norwegian immigrants. The vessel depicted is an example of those used by their ancestors, who ventured far from their homeland in search of new lands to conquer.
