Eero Saarinen came to America from Finland in 1923 at the age of 13 and received his architecture education in this country. His Trans World Airlines terminal at Dulles International Airport is considered one of his most important projects. Exterior design of the building itself suggested the spirit of flight. With that building, he developed the potentials of concrete shell construction and encouraged the use of concrete shells in contemporary American architecture. Saarinen was considered a pragmatist who was able to vary his style to meet the demands of the task at hand.
