Hugo Lafayette Black was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court by Franklin D. Roosevelt. He accepted life membership in the Ku Klux Klan in 1923 and resigned two years later. A month following his confirmation as a Supreme Court justice the KKK situation was publicized. His resignation was demanded by many, but he remained. Two years later he ruled in favor of singer Marian Anderson, who had been refused permission to perform at Washington, D.C.'s Constitution Hall of the Daughters of the American Revolution. In 1944 he upheld the right of the U.S. military to evacuate Japanese-American citizens from the West Coast after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
