This design was issued in connection with the flight of the Graf Zeppelin to
the World's Fair in Chicago, and was intended as a goodwill gesture, helping to
publicize the event.
The flight went to Miami, Akron, and Chicago, and back to Europe. The Graf
Zeppelin was built and commanded by Dr. Hugo Eckener.
A former newspaper reporter and an early critic of Count Ferdinand von
Zeppelin's experiments with dirigibles, Dr. Eckener became a pilot, and in 1921
manager of the Zeppelin enterprises.
He built and delivered to the United States the dirigible Los Angeles as part
of reparations for World War I.
