More than 11 percent of the total funds raised through voluntary contributions go to social-welfare groups, the largest portion of that going to agencies of the United Way. Formerly known as Community Chest, and sometimes having other names in various localities, United Way is the umbrella organization for annual community fund drives. Local operations of many national organizations--Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and YMCA--receive substantial portions of their annual budgets through United Way activities. Groups totally based at the local level also are major participants. More than 95 percent of all money given each year in the United States comes from individuals, with the remainder coming from businesses and foundations and through bequests.
