Not related to the red delicious apple, the golden delicious is an apple cultivar with a yellow color. Its taste is very sweet and it tends to shrivel and bruise easily and, thus, requires careful handling and storage. The golden delicious is a favorite for apple sauce, apple butter, and salads. It was discovered on a family farm in Clay County, WV, and locally was known as Mullin’s Yellow Seedling and Annit apple. The farm’s owner, Anderson Mullins, sold the tree and propagation rights to Stark Brothers Nurseries, which first marketed the variety in 1914 as a companion to the red delicious.
