Fort Moultrie was a fortification on Sullivan Island, at the entrance to the harbor of Charleston, SC. It originally was named Fort Sullivan and was held by a garrison of American troops under Col. William Moultrie against a 10-ship British force on June 28, 1776. The fort was renamed to honor Col. Moultrie. A new building on the same site was the Confederate headquarters for the bombardment of Fort Sumter in April 1861, the event which began the Civil War.
