William Buchanan's No. 999 was built in 1892 for the New York Central & Hudson River Railroad. Of sixty-two locomotives shown at the Colombian Exposition- -many built just for the occasion--the No. 999 was the most popular. It became the first vehicle in the world to exceed a hundred miles per hour on May 10, 1893, running between Batavia and Buffalo.
