Artist Asher Brown Durand was part of the Hudson River School. His painting Kindred Spirits shows friends, poet William Cullen Bryant and artist Thomas Cole, in the Catskill Mountains. The landscape combines Kaaterskill Falls in the distance and Kaaterskill Clove. Durand’s painting was from memory of 20 years prior and honors his friendship the Bryant. The painting was commissioned as a gift to Bryant, who had delivered a eulogy for Cole, who died in 1848. The painting not only shows two long-time friends, but also visually recorded the relationship between the literary and art circles of the early 19th century.
