Ferrets are mammals belonging to the weasel family. Those of Europe are the domesticated form of the polecat. Since ancient times, the ferret has been used to kill rats and to drive rabbits from their burrows. The black-footed ferret of the western United States is Mustelidae nigripes. It feeds primarily on prairie dogs. The black-footed ferret is near extinction.
